Common Reasons Your Trash Didn’t Get Picked Up

Its Trash pick up day – Almost everyone has been there — you set out your garbage for pickup on the designated day, but the company that usually hauls it away never comes to collect it. In some cases, they don’t come for several days, or even until next week’s pickup time, leaving you inconvenienced.

What’s going on when these situations arise? There could be several reasons your trash did not get picked up. Learning more about these possibilities can help you know when to be patient and when to call your trash collector for more information.

1. Your Cans Weren’t at the Curb in Time

If you’ve lived at your current address for a while, you’ve likely noticed your trash hauler comes to get your street’s garbage around the same time every week, depending on the company’s schedule. When you miss this opportunity, you won’t get another until next week.

Trash collection schedules can be unpredictable, so it’s best to put your garbage cans on the curb the night before your collection day. Then, your trash will be ready for pickup no matter what time your trash hauler comes by.

2. You Put Additional Trash Out

Have you ever had so much trash that it doesn’t fit in your garbage can? Many municipalities have rules about how people organize their trash for collection. If your local ordinances state that all garbage must be in the designated cans for pickup, you must follow those guidelines. Note that there may be an extra charge for additional trash, too.

Similarly, your trash hauler may not accept specific types of trash, such as hazardous materials or furniture. Avoid putting out items the company can’t pick up and make other arrangements to get rid of them, like taking them to a local landfill or recycling center. Another idea is to purchase an extra trash can to fit any additional bags or objects you want to put out.

In most cases, your trash hauler will still likely pick up the extra items you put out, but you may still want to look into your area’s residential garbage collection rules to ensure pickups happen.

3. It Was a Holiday

When your trash didn’t get picked up on the usual day, it could’ve been because of a federal holiday. When occasions like the Fourth of July and Christmas Day roll around, you’ll likely have to follow a different trash pickup schedule for the week. In most cases, you’ll set your trash cans out the day after the holiday, but you should always double-check the adjusted schedule to make sure.

4. There Was Bad Weather

Whether it’s a flood, a snowstorm or another type of severe weather, trash haulers can have problems getting to your house when the roads are unsafe or inaccessible. If you don’t feel comfortable driving in inclement conditions, your trash collector probably has the same issues. Be patient in bad weather situations, as your trash hauler will return to action as soon as it’s safe. If trash collection services don’t start again following severe weather, it may be worthwhile to reach out to see what’s going on.

5. Your Trash Hauler Had a Schedule Change or Delay

Life can be unpredictable, and your trash collection company might need to suddenly deviate from its standard pickup schedule. For example, trash haulers can encounter issues with their trucks, employees can quit or call out sick and scheduling issues can arise. A professional trash-hauling company will do what it can to avoid schedule changes and delays, but unforeseen circumstances can come up, and your trash may remain by the curb.

When your trash hauler doesn’t come by, it isn’t a holiday and there are no unusual weather issues, you may want to contact them to report a missed pickup. If your current waste management provider consistently fails to pick up your trash, it may be time to switch to a more reliable company.
